“Virginia is for lovers.” That’s the motto of the Virginia tourism industry, and it’s certainly not just an empty boast. With its many historical sites, interesting cities and wealth of attractions, it’s easy to fall in love with Virginia. It’s also important to understand Virginia’s history, culture and sense of place before visiting.

The basics

Virginia lies at the crossroads of the United State’s East Coast. It mixes old Southern grace and charm with a Northern sense of cosmopolitanism and urbanism. The state features several distinct regions: Northern Virginia, Eastern Virginia, Central Virginia, Southwest Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley.

Virginia’s weather is temperate and usually mild by U.S. standards. It does have four distinct seasons, so dress accordingly. Travel can be accomplished by car, train (Amtrak, Virginia Railway Express, and the Washington Metro) or air (Washington Dulles International Airport, Reagan Washington National Airport, Norfolk International Airport, Richmond International Airport, and Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport.) Lastly, Virginia’s culture and history and largely American Southern, which influences everything from the state’s historical sites to cuisine.
